Thornton Primary School

Welcome to Thornton Primary School

I am delighted to welcome you to the Thornton Primary School website which serves a dual purpose of providing the routine information for new and existing parents as well as an insight into our school’s aims and beliefs. It is impossible to encapsulate on a website, all of the activities and experiences that  make up what daily life is like at our school. However, we have tried to give you a flavour of what we are about.

Children at Thornton are encouraged to find out about their own strength and talents to allow them to strive to achieve the best they can all the time. A high expectation underpins all we do and we try to create a curriculum that is matched to children’s next steps in learning, which the children feel they are fully involved with. Our school’s expectations of behaviour allow children to focus on learning, and this is supported by positive reinforcement through the award of house points in class, and other certificates in our weekly achievement assembly. Our values (TRAIN) permeate all areas of school life; please have a look on our website to find out more.

School is far more than a place in which to work and learn. It is also a place where we begin to build relationships with other people, find out how to work collaboratively, develop a sense of ourselves, and discover how we as individuals fit into our world and society. We believe that it takes a whole community to educate a child, so we aim to work in partnership with parents, both individually and collectively. We are proud of the work that we do with our Parents’ Association.

Thornton Primary is a large school with three classes per year group. Being this size offers many advantages. However, there remains a sense of family within the school; the classes in each year group are close to one another and they do different activities together. Children get to know familiar adults who work in their particular class or year group so that they always know who to approach.

I hope you will enjoy browsing our website, but please do not hesitate to get in touch should you have a question. You would be very welcome to visit and see us in action!

Very best wishes,

Liz Davison
